Elizabeth Bennet, a smart, kind country girl, is the second of the five daughters in her family. The family has no son, so it is the cousin, Mr. Collins that inherits[1] the fortune. Mrs. Bennet is
always finding rich husbands for her five daughters. The appearance of Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy makes the family’s life different. The two gentlemen attend a ball. Then Mr. Bingley makes a good impression, while Mr. Darcy appears proud and refuses to dance with Elizabeth. Soon after, Darcy finds himself fond of Elizabeth, but he tries to hide his feeling.
Later the cousin Mr. Collins visits the family. He wants to choose Jane as his wife. However, she is engaged with Mr. Bingley. Then Collins thinks Elizabeth is also a good choice, while he is refused again. At the same time, Elizabeth meets Mr. Wickham, a militia officer who says Darcy has cheated him. This increases Elizabeth’s dislike of Mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins recovers from the refusal and becomes engaged to Elizabeth’s good friend, Charlotte. Mrs. Bennet is very disappointed as Mr. Bingley also breaks the relationship with Jane.
Elizabeth is invited by Mr. Collins and Charlotte to visit in Kent, where she meets Mr. Darcy again. The two spend much good time together. With a struggle Mr. Darcy confesses[2] his love for Elizabeth, but he still has a very arrogant[3] manner as he believes that she will accept him. However, Elizabeth knows that Darcy destroys her sister’s and Bingley’s happiness. With the strong impression of arrogance, she firmly refuses and claims that she will not marry him though all the men in the world die.
The next morning the two meet again when they are walking. Darcy gives Elizabeth a letter to explain his actions. Darcy claims he persuades[4] Bingley into giving up as he thinks that Jane has no interest in Bingley. He also reveals that Wickham is a hypocritical[5] playboy. His reasonable explanation gradually changes Elizabeth’s attitude towards him.
Some months later, Elizabeth visit Pemberley with her uncle and aunt. During this trip Elizabeth finds out that Darcy is honest and gracious in his mind. Soon a bad news comes that Lydia has eloped with Mr. Wickham because of the gambling debt. Darcy finds the couple and pays the debt, which allows Mr. Wickham to marry Lydia. At first, Darcy keeps it as a secret. But then Elizabeth knows the truth from others. Finally, she gives up her prejudice view on Darcy.
Later, Darcy’s aunt visits the Bennet family and attempts to persuade her not to marry Darcy. The aunt does not succeed as Elizabeth refuses her. Darcy returns to the town with Bingley and tries to rebuild the relationship with Jane. This time Elizabeth is full of courage and she finally opens her mind to Darcy. The story ends up with happy life.
The love story of Elizabeth and Darcy is full of misunderstanding and hardship[6]. They come from different social classes and have different back-
ground, which shapes their different characters. Darcy behaves arrogantly, but has a kind heart. The superior conditions make him unaware of his arrogance; Elizabeth is smart and thoughtful, but she is over-trusting of the first impression. Sometimes she believes that she knows the truth. Actually, she is deeply in the trouble of prejudice.
When the two fall in love with each other, it is impossible for them to have a peaceful love. The man hurts the lady with his arrogance, while the lady rejects the offer of love as a result of her prejudice. However, the true love could not be hidden any more. Darcy gradually expresses his honesty and Elizabeth abandons[7] her prejudice. The two become brave and show their love to each other. At last, they acquire[8] happiness.
The distance between realities will always exist, and the difference of personality could not be totally eliminated[9]. The true love will come only if we abandon arrogance and overcome prejudice.
It is universally acknowledged that the eternal theme of Jane Austen’s novels is the choice people make for marriage partners,so is in Pride and Prejudice.Mrs.Bonnet had no other wish if her five daughters could get married as soon as possible with someone wealthy. At a dancing ball,it is obvious that Mr.Bingley could not help falling in love at the first sight with Miss Jane because of her stunning beauty.
Mrs.Benne was so excited that she could not hold her manner and declared publicly she would have a daughter married soon, which frightened Mr.Bingley away.Mr.Collins,a distance nephew of Mr.Bennet, came to ask a marriage to one of his cousins before Mrs.Bennet was able to get clear why Mr.Bingley left suddenly.
After receiving the hint from Mrs.Bennet that Jane already had an admirer,Mr.Collins turned to Elizabeth without wasting a minute and to Miss Charlotte Lucas two days later after refused by Elizabeth. It was difficult for Mrs.Bennet to recover herself as a result of the“deadly stupid” decision made by Elizabeth until she got the news that Lydia finally married Mr.Wickham, though the marriage was built on the basis of ten thousand pounds.
Mr.Darcy offered the money and did everything departing from his will just because he loved Elizabeth so much.He could not hide his feelings any more and showed his affection to Elizabeth at last, who, because of a series of misunderstandings towards him, rejected him without hesitation. This plot is the climax of the novel as the prejudice of Elizabeth to Mr.Darcy was exposed and removed since then. And the combination of the two young couples,Jane and Bingley,Elizabeth and Darcy came at last.
