On the eve of the Spring Festival, every household will paste up on doors a spring coupletwritten on red paper to give a happy and prosperous atmosphere of the Festival.
In the past, the Chinese usually wrote their own spring couplets with a brush or asked others to do for them, while nowadays, it is common for people to buy the printed spring couplets in the market.
They are usually posted in pairs because even numbers are connected with good luck and auspiciousness in Chinese culture.
文中的spring couplet就是“春联”的意思,其中couplet是名词,意为“对句;对联”,如:a congratulatory couplet(一幅贺联),在我国很多农村地区,春节时还会贴年画(pasting New Year prints),最出名的就是门神(Door Gods)。
A couplet is two lines of poetry which come next to each other, especially two lines that rhyme with each other and are the same length.
