父亲节的英文是father's day，中国大陆官方没有设立正式的父亲节。但内地民众习惯上使用6月第三个星期日当作父亲节；中国台湾父亲节是8月8日。中国台湾的父亲节订于每年的八月八日，又称为“八八节”。早在抗日战争白热化的1945年，上海一些爱国人士为颂扬和纪念在战争中为国捐躯的父亲们，发起每年8月8日为中国的“父亲节”。
抗战胜利后，党国元老、上海各界名流如吴稚晖、李石曾、潘公展等人，觉得订定父亲节很有意义，有特别加以提倡的必要，就联名呈请政府准予规定每年八月八日为父亲节，通令全国遵行。后来呈请获准，八月八日就正式成为我国的父亲节。世界其它各国也庆祝父亲节，不过并不是在八月八日，例如美国、加拿大、阿根廷等国的父亲节，是订在六月的第三个星期日。
