Mywayaheadislong;Iseenoending;yethighandlowIwillsearchwithmywillunbending.路漫漫其修远兮,吾将上下而求索。“漫漫”亦作“曼曼”，无涯无际貌。形容时间长或距离远。甯戚《饭牛歌》：“长夜漫漫何时旦？”《文选.扬雄<甘泉赋>》：“指东西之漫漫。”这里特指距离远。“修”起码有7个义项，其中有“长；高”之义。《国策.齐策一》：“邹忌修八尺有余。”即用其“高”义；这里用其“长”义，“修远”是并列词，类似于“遥远”，强调“路”之长。“上下”也有多个义项，其中有“从高处到低处及从低处到高处”之义。这里即用此义，含千方百计之意。“求索”就是寻求、探索。试翻译成现代汉语，上半句：（在追寻真理、真知方面），前面的道路无涯无际，极其遥远啊；下半句：我必将千方百计地进行寻求和探索。语出战国末期楚国人、杰出的政治家和爱国诗人屈原《离骚》。
