当前已引起人们重视的颗粒物分为两类：PM2.5（细颗粒物，此处的“细”取汉字的第一个含义：颗粒小的，与“粗”相对）和PM10（可吸入颗粒物），前者直径不超过2.5微米，是人类头发直径的1/30，后者则较粗大，当前的欧盟空气质量标准限定，PM2.5的年平均值最多为40微克每立方米，PM10为25微克每立方米。联合国世界卫生组织的指导原则建议：PM2.5和PM10的年平均值分别为20微克每立方米和10微克每立方米。
