Earlier in the day, arch rivals Brazil hammered Japan in straight sets. The Brazilians dominated the game right from the beginning and never gave the Japanese side any chances.

排球运动源于美国，1895年，美国马萨诸塞州霍利约克市，由韦廉姆·G·摩根发明；1900年左右，排球自美国传入加拿大。1905年，排球传入古巴、巴西、中国等国家，成为当时风靡美洲的一项时尚运动。1949年，首届世界男子排球锦标赛在捷克斯洛伐克的布拉格举办。

排球最高级的组织机构为国际排球联合会，截至2020年9月，共有222个协会会员，分属欧洲、亚洲、非洲、中北美和加勒比地区、南美5个洲级排球联合会。中国排球协会是中华全国体育总会的团体会员，是中国奥林匹克委员会承认的全国性专项运动协会。
