An ant is a wise creature for itself, but it is a shrewd thing in an orchard2 or garden. And certainly men that are great lovers of themselves waste the public. Divide with reasonbetween self-love and society; and be so true to thyself, as thou be not false to others; spe-cially to thy king and country. It is a poor centre of a man's actions, himself. It is rightearth. For that only stands fast upon his own centre; whereas all things that have affinitywith the heavens, move upon the centre of another, which they benefit. The referring of allto a man's self is more tolerable3 in a sovereign prince; because themselves are not onlythemselves, but their good and evil is at the peril of the public fortune. But it is a desperateevil in a servant to a prince, or a citizen in a republic. For whatsoever affairs pass such aman's hands, he crooketh them to his own ends; which must needs to be often eccentric tothe ends of his master or state. Therefore, let princes, or states, choose such servants ashave not this mark; except they mean their service should be made but the accessory. Thatwhich maketh the effect more pernicious is that all proportion is lost It were disproportionenough for the servant's good to be preferred before the master's; but yet it is a greaterextreme, when a little good of the servant shall carry things against a great good of themaster's. And yet that is the case of bad officers, treasurers, ambassadors, generals, andother false and corrupt4 servants; which set a bias upon their bowl, of their own petty endsand envies, to the overthrow of their master's great and important affairs. And for the mostpart, the good such servants receive is after the model of their own fortune; but the hurt ...中英目录第一卷 人生的思考The Thought ofLife青春Youth真实的高贵True Nobility快乐谷The Happy Valley送行Seeing People off论青年与老年of Youth and Age美腿与丑腿The Handsome and Deformed Leg如果我休息,我就生锈If Rest, Rtat论自私者的聪明of Wisdom for a Man's Self赫拉克勒斯的选择The Choice of Hercule3关于扫帚柄的沉思A Meditation upon a Broomstick哨子The Whistle论自助SeIf-Reliance培根论真理Francis Bacon on Truth蜉蝣死e Ephemera年轻人Youth徒步旅行Walking Tours生命乒人的青春Man's Youth艰辛的人生The Strenuou Life幸福之路The Road to Happiness亚里士多德论友谊A ristotle on Friendship亚里士多德论自律A ristotle on SeIf-Discipline童年Childhood第二卷 生命的礼赞The Glories of Life初雪First Snow暴风雨礼赞Glories of the Storm人与自然Man and Nature十月之湖October Lake玫瑰The Rose晚夏Late Summer十月的日出An October Sunrise河谷寻幽Down the Valley八月August雾Fog郁金香Tulips自然Nature巴黎:浪漫之都Parist a Romantic Capital一个完全相反的地方A Thoroughly Negative Place这里是纽约Here Is New York第三卷 人在旅途第四卷 阳光下的时光内容简介《美丽英文全集》(散文卷)是系列一册,“美丽英文”这一品牌书系创立至今已有三年时间,出版图书数十个品种。

It can bring the simplest beauty in the gift of a shell or the harshest danger from the pull of a rip tide. The waves, currents, and tides of the sea are much the same as the ups, downs and precariousness of life itself. Just as the ocean can be a mix of tranquility and disturbance so can life be a mix of calm and duress. The lessons of the sea, both good and bad, have followed me through my personal and professional life. And I have learned that I can often reflect on these and lead a more meaningful life of inner peace. It is about accepting life's balance of nature as reflected in the waters of the ocean. Facing challenges will always be a part of life, but I have learned from the sea how to face them with calm. As seaman and divers have discovered, many essential skills at sea run parallel to lessons for living a meaningful, peaceful life. Sometimes body surfing can turn into an all-out knockdown fest from the ocean. Wave after wave seems to come quicker before you can catch a good one. And dodging, diving and coming up for air before the next one strikes can send you swimming for shore. Challenges in life seem to come in waves and we can find our dexterity for handling tough situations waning.Face those waves head on just like a boat, or else you'll capsize. If you procrastinate. whine, and complain about the hard situations in life, the waves of difficulties will roll you upside down. Be proactive when facing down a challenge.Be determined to solve your problems, or life will be determined to knock you down like a rogue wave. 英语散文经典名篇:阳光下的时光 "...I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days."-Henry David Thoreau. “…… When Thoreau wrote that line, he was thinking of the Walden Pond he knew as a boy. Woodchoppers and the iron horse had not yet greatly damaged the beauty of its setting. A boy could go to the pond and lie on his back against the seat of a boat, lazily drifting from shore to shore while the loons dived and the swallows dipped around him. Thoreau loved to recall such sunny hours and summer days "when idleness was the most attractive and productive business." I too was a boy in love with a pond, rich in sunny hours and summer days. Sun and summer are still what they always were, but the boy and the pond changed. The boy, who is now a man, no longer finds much time for idle drifting. The pond has been annexed by a great city. The swamps where herons once hunted are now drained and filled with houses. The bay where water lilies quietly floated is now a harbor for motor boats. In short, everything that the boy loved no longer exists - except in the man's memory of it. Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by that rule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow never happens. The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to our lives. Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in memory are never lost. Death itself is powerless to still a remembered voice or erase a remembered smile. And for one boy who is now a man, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quiet hour in the sun. Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle various situations. Love plays a pivotal role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could go haywire and also become cruel and ferocious. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who showed us with unconditional love and care, they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others feelings. Kids make a person responsible and mature and help us to understand life better. Materialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away. Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing success on us is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones. Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same we have only one choice - keep moving on in life and be hopeful. Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. It is a matter of the will, quality of the imagination, vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self distrust blows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 0r 16, there is in every human being's heart the unfailing child like appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station, so long as it receives message of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house.
The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode ; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving.
Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means. Which should be more disreputable? Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends, turn the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it; but the young know they are wretched, for they are full of the truthless ideals which have been instilled into them, and each time they come in contact with the real they are bruised and wounded. It looks as if they were victims of a conspiracy; for the books they read, ideal by the necessity of selection, and the conversation of their elders, who look back upon the past through a rosy haze of forgetfulness, prepare them for an unreal life.
They must discover for themselves that all they have read and all they have been told are lies, lies, lies; and each discovery is another nail drivens into the body on the cross of life. The strange thing is that each one who has gone through that bitter disillusionment add to it in his turn,, unconsciously, by the power within him which is stronger than himself.

Flowers fade and fly, and flying fill the sky;Their bloom departs, their perfume gone, yet who stands pitying by?And wandering threads of gossamer on the summer-house are seen,And falling catkins lightly dew-steeped strike the embroidered screen.A girl within the inner rooms, I mourn that spring is done,A veil of sorrow binds my heart, and solace there is none.I pass into the garden, and I turn to use my hoe,Treading over fallen glories as I lightly come and go.There are willow-sprays and flowers of elm, and these have scent enough.I care not if the peach and plum, are stripped from every bough. The peach-tree and the plum-tree too next year may bloom again,But next year, in the inner rooms, tell me, shall I remain?By the third moon new fragrant nests shall see the light of day,New swallows fly among the beams, each on its thoughtless way.Next year once more they'll seek their food among the painted flowers,But I may go, and beams may go, and with them swallow bowers.Three hundred days and sixty make a year, and therein lurkDaggers of wind and swords of frost to do their cruel work. How long will last the fair fresh flower which bright and brighter glows? One morning its petals float away, but to where no-one knows.Gay bloooming buds attract the eye, faded they're lost to sight;Oh, let me sadly bury them beside these steps tonight.Alone, unseen, I seize my hoe, with many a bitter tear; They fall upon the naked stem and stains of blood appear. The night-jar now has ceased to mourn, the dawn comes on apace,I seize my hoe and close the gates, leaving the burying-place;But not until sunbeams dot the wall does slumber soothe my care,The cold rain pattering on the pane as I lie shivering there. You wonder that with flowing tears my youthful cheek is wet; They partly rise from angry thoughts, and partly from regret.Regret that spring comes suddenly; and anger that it cannot last.No sound to announce its approach, or warn us when it's passed.Last night within the garden sad songs were faintly heard,Sung, as I knew, by spirits, spirits of flower and bird.We cannot keep them here with us, these much-loved birds and flowers,They sing but for a season's space, and bloom a few short hours. If only I on a feathered wing might soar aloft and fly,With flower spirits I would seek the rooms within the sky.But high in the airWhat grave is there? No, give me an embroidered bag within to lay their charms,And Mother Earth, pure Mother Earth, shall hide them in her arms. Thus those sweet forms which spotless came shall spotless go again,Nor pass dirty with mud and filth along some filthy drain.Farewell, dear flowes, forever now, thus buried as was best,I have not yet divined when I with you shall sink to rest.I who can bury flowers like this a laughing-stock shall be;I cannot say in days to come what hands shall bury me.See how when spring begins to fail each opening flower fades; So too there is a time of age and death for beautiful maids; And when the fleeting spring is gone, and days of beauty over,Flowers fall, and lovely maidens die, and both are known no more.
