Do you know what the White House is? Perhaps some of you do, while others don’t. The White House is a place. The President(总统) of the U.S.A lives in it. It is in Washington D.C. It is really white. But do you know why the White House is white? The story goes back to 1812. That year England was at war with America. The British captured (占领) the city and some of the buildings, including (包括) the President’s house, were set on fire (燃烧). In 1841, in order to hide (隐藏) the marks(痕迹) of the fire, the brown stone walls of the President’s home were painted(粉刷) white and it has been the “White House” ever since. My cousin John is ten years old. He likes reading very much. He studies in a school near his home. But he has no money. His family is very poor. He cannot buy any books, He thinks he can find a job and then he can make some money. A week later he got his first job. That is to send newspapers to houses. The boss told him, “You will get three yuan an hour, and next year you will make five yuan an hour.” “That’s wonderful!” my cousin answered, “I will see you next year.” The boss said, “ If you like to wait, the next year you will be my boss. Are you sure?”Sue and Linda usually go to school by car. They drive past a cinema, a supermarket and a food shop. The food shop is next to the supermarket. Jack and Michael usually go to school by bus. They go past a bank and a post office. The bank is next to the post office. Mary usually goes to work by bike. She rides a bike past a police office, a library and a swimming pool.
