摩登一词最早出现于《楞严经》、巴利文经典和大正藏第十四卷的《佛说摩登女经》。19世纪20年代末期，因为与modern读音相近，拥有“现代”，“时髦”，“时尚”之意。19世纪30年代以后，逐渐以“时髦”，“时尚”为主要含义。摩登一词起源于佛教，作梵典中的摩登伽解，为一首陀罗种姓（奴隶阶级）的年轻女子摩登伽女之名，在《楞严经》、巴利文经典和大正藏第十四卷的《佛说摩登女经》均有记载。
