在微观层面，材质可以简单地划分为两个基本类型：各向同性（isotropic）和各向异性(anisotropic)，两个英文单词的意思是:iso是希腊语，对于英语中的equal，而tropic对应英语中的direction，而an表示对立面。所以说各向同性的意思就是在所有方向上材质有用统一的表现，各向异性就是在不同方向材质趋向于表现不同。 各向同性材质在给定点的任何方向上拥有相同的材质属性。 如果考虑光源的影响，各向同性材质不依赖于光的方向。对于任何波长的光，只会有单个的常量折射系数，因此，我们可以说在各向同性材质中的光速不受变化辐照的影响。 各向异性材质，由非对称晶体结构组成，依赖于方向。换句话说，各向异性的属性屈居于材质的朝向。每个面在应用相同的负载到不同的轴时会产生不同的效果。即如果某一属性沿x轴测量，沿y轴或z轴测量的效果会不尽相同。 由于其不对称的内部结构，它的属性随光的方向变化，也可以说对于每种特定的波长有一个折射稀疏的放位。 各向异性材质被细分为几种类型： 各向同性材质，它可以高度重组，变为任何形状。例如金属、玻璃、大多数的流体和高分子聚合物都是各向同性材质。 各向异性材质，最常见的时木头和石头。石头的类型通常是层状结构，木头是自然加固的，可以通过它们纤维的朝向观察到。
