The concept of adulthood is vastly different between China and the United States. But everyone thinks that when a person can take responsibility for himself, make independent decisions, and be finally self-sufficient, he is an adult. There is a little traditional factor-occupying an important position in Chinese life, which is not available in American life. Studies have shown that adulthood is a profound cultural concept : in the individualistic United States, parents are considered to be dependent on themselves; in collectivist China, they are the responsibility of children. Chinese young people attach more importance to self-discipline and obligations to others, such as getting married, becoming a parents, and caring for parents.
