keep sb from doing sth/sth 是阻止某人做某事，其中from 不能省。其它如：stop。。。from，prevent。。。from都可以省略。
第一句意思是“他们注意让自己的土地保持肥沃，并远离疾病。” 第二句是“这个东西能让空气和水远离化学污染。”意义当然有差别，你看翻译就知道了。用and纯粹就是一种连接关系，没什么重要的地方They focus on keeping their soil rich and （keeping it）free of disease 对的，这是一种省略，不省的话太麻烦了肯定不能去去掉free因为 keep sb from sth 是阻止的意思，keep sth free from 是远离的意思
be free of 摆脱。be free from 不受什么的影响，两个并列的宾语补足语，去掉free，一个意思。都是免于，不受影响。
